The Father of the Bride Speech

01 — The structure that works

Aim for 3–5 minutes. That's roughly 400–600 words — long enough to mean something, short enough that nobody checks their watch.

  1. Welcome everyone

Introduce yourself for the guests who don't know you, and thank them for coming. One or two sentences.

  2. Talk about your daughter

Who she is — not her résumé, her spirit. The little things you've noticed since she was small.

  3. Tell one or two stories

This is the heart of the speech. Pick stories that show her character — funny is good, warm is better. Keep them short.

  4. Welcome the groom and his family

Say what you admire about him, and welcome his family into yours. This matters more than most dads realize.

  5. Share a wish or a piece of advice

One sincere thought about marriage — from your own experience, not a greeting card.

  6. Raise the glass

End with a toast to the bride and groom. Short, clear, and from the heart.

02 — Example lines you can steal

Make them your own — change the details, keep the feeling.

03 — A real speech, delivered by a real dad

Templates are useful. But nothing teaches like the real thing. Here is the speech I gave at my daughter Sydney's wedding — word for word.

For those of you I have not had the honor to meet yet, my name is Alex and this is Flora, and we are Sydney's parents.

For the last 23 years, Flora and I have been an instrument of G-D to prepare Sydney for what ever life throws at her and to ensure she is mentally and spiritually prepared.

Raising kids is never easy but certainly rewarding watching them grow and mature. When Sydney started high school, our parenting function changed to more of an advisor role to help her continue her growth in life and how to make wise decisions by thinking through the consequences of her decisions.

So when we talked through one of her decisions she wanted to make and I saw trouble ahead, I would tell her that "I would highly recommend that she reconsider, and I would explain why, so she could consider the pros, cons, and the implications associated with that decision.

The objective was for her to come to her own conclusion that what she was contemplating was NOT the best decision without me having to tell her - NO

I tell you this story because she became a very good student of learning how to make good decisions - case in point, when it came to choosing her HUSBAND, Sydney made a WISE decision!!!

Garrett, is a young man who has many incredible qualities about him including having a strong character, is extremely intelligent, and has a bright future in finance but - most above ALL, HE adores Sydney!!

I am PROUD to call Garrett my SON!

Flora and I welcome Garrett and his family into ours with open ARMS.

Please stand up and let's toast the newly weds -

Garret and Sydney - may your future be filled with health, love, and a G-D driven life!!!

04 — Delivery tips

A good speech delivered well beats a great speech delivered badly.

05 — Mistakes to avoid

After the speech comes the dance

The words end. The music begins.

Here's something most dads don't think about until it's too late: right after your speech, you'll take your daughter's hand for the father-daughter dance. What if that song wasn't just a song you picked — but a song written about the two of you, from your own words?

At Siempre Studios, we create more than a song. We turn your memories, your words, and the love you have for your daughter into a fully custom musical experience — with original lyrics, music, and vocals created around the story only the two of you share.

Imagine taking her hand for that dance while your family and friends hear your story through music. Your guests won't simply watch a father-daughter dance. They'll feel the bond between you, understand what makes it so special, and share in a moment that could become the talk of the wedding.

Long after the celebration ends, that song remains yours. You and your daughter can replay it, relive the dance, and treasure those memories for years to come. Here's the song I created for Sydney:

06 — Quick answers

The questions every dad asks.

How long should a father of the bride speech be?

Three to five minutes. That's the sweet spot — enough room for a story or two and a real toast, short enough to hold the room.

Should I memorize it or use notes?

Use notecards. Memorizing word-for-word adds pressure, and blanking out mid-speech is worse than glancing at a card. Know your opening and closing cold; let the cards carry the middle.

Can I include humor?

Yes — warm humor. Gentle teasing about her childhood is perfect. Anything that embarrasses her, the groom, or an ex belongs nowhere near a microphone.

What if I cry?

You probably will, at least a little. Pause, breathe, sip some water, and keep going. A dad moved by his daughter's wedding day is exactly what everyone came to see.

How far ahead should I book a personalized song?

A custom song takes time to write, arrange, and perfect — the earlier the better. Dads planning 2027 weddings are booking now.
